He was born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. in Roswell New Mexico, the singer-songwriter fell in love with Colorado and eventually settled in Aspen. Brown of Colorado Music Hall of Fame, the hall's curator of fame said: "I don't believe there anyone else who has as much a connection to Colorado in the same way as John Denver." Danoff initially wrote the song to Johnny Cash's tune in mind, but Denver was aware from the very first moment he listened to the early versions that the song could be a huge success. The singer recorded the song within a couple of days following a performance to an enthusiastic audience in Washington D.C.
