John Denver was a superstar artist who was a hit with his pop-folk songs and many of them inspired by Colorado. Danoff was credited with Johnny Cash as the inspiration for the song, but Denver realized that it could turn into a hit once it was discovered that an earlier version. The singer recorded the song only a few days afterward after performing it to crowds of enthusiastic fans in Washington D.C.
